Duke Thomas History
Batman: Wayne Family Adventures takes place on one of the various Earths existing within the DC Comics Universe, and most of Duke’s history fits that of the mainstream counterpart on Prime Earth. Some ages and timeline issues (how much time has passed between events) have shifted, but generally the primary events for the characters have remained the same, and that includes Duke.
The primary divergence in the events for him, is that Duke does not move in with Bruce for a limited time while training to become him new protégé, and then move in with his cousin after he takes his own codename. Instead, it is not until he already is Batman’s official daytime partner and has the name, The Signal, that he moves in with Bruce and is fostered by him permanently (thus making this post Batman and the Signal in continuity for him sans moving in with Jay). And by moving in with Bruce, he is officially welcomed into the Bat Family. This also means that Duke formalizes and deepens his bonds with the Bat Family instead of taking Bruce’s recommendation to join the Outsiders and bond with that team more.
Duke and Damian are the only children living at home (and the only ones who still go to school), but the others visit regularly for family time, relaxation, and for vigilante business. Duke is also the only one in the family who works on a typical daytime schedule. He does his vigilante work in the mornings and afternoons after school and on the weekends. Everyone else in the family works at night and they try to respect Duke’s different schedule as much as possible.
Duke goes to Gotham Academy, ends up crushing on and then dating another student named Ana, but their relationship is short-lived. His family (Tim and Stephanie in particular) are very nosy and protective of him when he and Ana go on their first date, to the point that Duke is embarrassed about it, but it works out in the end… until Ana breaks up with him. Then it’s Dick and Cass who step in to comfort him. And while going to school and doing patrols after, he still needs to make time for Bruce’s training sessions where he learns about different rogues, techniques to combat them, and what to do in case of all the different emergency scenarios that can come up in Gotham. He does sometimes drift off during these sessions.
Duke spends a lot of time with Damian as he and Damian are the ones still living at home and they both love animals so when Damian wants to help with the animal shelter or other anime-related charities, Duke will join in. Duke also spends time with Tim, seeing as they are close in age (Tim is 18 and Duke is 16). It's Stephanie though who teaches Duke how to drive the Batmobile during an emergency when Duke had to be called in for the Night Shift. Still, the family bonds and sticks together, ready to be there for each other, even the people who act like they “aren’t part of the family” like Jason, still come around to fight over cookies and pastries from Alfred, joke about Vigilante Bingo after patrol, or take part in family tournament night (this year Damian and Duke took one for the team and kept Bruce and Alfred distracted while Jason, Tim, Cassandra, and Stephanie competed, and Barbara played referee).
Inventory:
1. Signal Armor: The suit he wears while fighting crime which has a reflective bat symbol that can cause blindness and confusion. The suit also has protective features such as a built-in electrical grid (for power and taser-capabilities) and stealth mode allowing it to turn invisible by syncing with Duke’s photokinetic manipulation abilities.
2. Signal Motorcyle: His transportation that is able to sync with his suit and also turn invisible.
3. Escrima Sticks: His weapons of choice that are connected by a chain to function similar to nunchaku. They also have spring-loaded blades that can act as grappling hooks.

Powers —
Skills:
Intelligent: Duke is extremely intelligent, although he can become easily bored with formal education settings or be distracted by stress. He spent years as a child training to beat the Riddler and almost won a Gotham Genius Grant for educational advancements. He also figured out the identities of many in the Batfamily on his own.
Strong Willed: Duke can be a bit more passive with those he cares about, but he’s extremely stubborn and defiant when confronted with people dismissing his views or not taking him seriously. He doesn’t give up and will keep fighting even when he’s barely able to stand up.
Martial Arts: Duke has a natural skill in close quarters fighting and is a training in various disciplines, including Tae Kwon Do. He has intentions to try and work his powers into his fighting style when possible.
Writing Skills: Duke has some talent in writing, especially poetry.
Superpowers:
Metahuman Physiology: Duke is a metahuman, which is a person with an activated metagene, which gives people a huge variety of abilities and extrasensory perceptions. Duke’s metahuman gene provides him Enhanced Healing (hours instead of days/weeks to heal serious wounds), Photokinesis, Umbrakinesis, and Power Amplification.
Photokinesis: the ability to see and manipulate the full electromagnetic spectrum in a variety of ways.
- 1. He can draw light into himself or expel it, allowing himself to turn invisible (which he syncs to his armor and motorcycle), create blinding light, and expel large amounts of energy.
- 2. Manipulate his vision based on the light spectrum, allowing him x-ray vision, telescopic/microscopic vision, and his more powerful visual abilities: Ghost Vision and Cosmic Perception.
- 3. Ghost Vision is his ability to see light in the area around him in both the past and future movement. He sees Ghost-like scenes and can be boosted to even include aural precognition.
- Cosmic Perception is the ability to recognize the electromagnetic spectrum as it extends beyond his own universe, and he can even recognize when changes are made to the universe (such as by means of timeline alterations). Cosmic Perception in particular will not be accessible due to the setting limitations.
- 1. Umbrakinesis allows him to absorb shadows into himself, creating more space for light or covering himself in them.
- 2. Generate shadows from himself and envelop an area around him in them to blind others.
- 3. He can bend and manipulate shadows like a physical object.
- 4. Travel using shadow like portals of darkness. Again, all of this it would take a lot of concentration and focus to use these abilities because Duke does not have a lot of training with the shadow-side of his abilities. He can use them, but if he’s not careful mistakes are definitely going to happen.
Limitations:
- Duke does have limitations in that he is not fully trained in any of his abilities, although he is trained in some more than others (still not a full year into being Signal after all). So while he may have a lot of powers connected to his photokinetic abilities, he doesn’t really know how to use all of them yet and sometimes that makes it hard for him to manage them, especially when trying on the fly.
- He also gets tired from overusing his abilities and can have trouble with focusing if he’s overstimulated by the electromagnetic spectrum. Gets migraines and headaches and needs to shut out his perception to recharge.
- He does not do well when under too much pressure and can make mistakes (such as when trying to use his not fully trained abilities, or when trying to remember all of the button functions in the Batmobile after only a five minute lesson on them), but he will try to make up for them quickly.
- Then there is the inability to control his Power Amplification ability, which can activate without him intending it to. This can allow his opponents, if they are metahumans, to have a boost in their own superpowers, thus making them even harder for him to beat until it stops (and it can wear him down very quickly depending on how many people it’s affecting).
- He also doesn’t know how to combine the two main sides of his abilities (photokinetic/umbrakinetic) yet so he can only use one of those intentionally at a time.
- His healing ability also tires him out. The more injuries, the longer it takes and the more tired he feels while it’s happening. His healing is also subconscious so he can’t control it to avoid wearing himself out from it.
- As stated above, he will have no access to Cosmic Perception for the sake of this game due to the setting’s limitations.
Personality —
Please EITHER (1) Summarize your character's personality — including motivations, behaviors, and psychology — in 300-600 words OR (2) Respond to the questions below.
Duke is someone who just wants to prove that he’s good at what he wants to do in his life. He has so much potential and so much skill, but one of his main goals is to prove to those that matter that he’s good and he fits in. He wants to be welcomed and accepted and to feel like he belongs to something bigger than himself. That is why he was part of the We Are Robin Movement and why he agreed to be Batman’s protégé. Duke wants to have a higher purpose to his life.
And it just so happens that he believes that the higher purpose in his life is to be a superhero. He really believes that everything he’s gone through in his life and everything he’s doing now is his raison d’etre. Being a hero and using the skills he has for helping others is so important to him that he was doing it even when people like the official Robins (present and former) wanted to talk him and his crew out of it. Of all the teens in the We Are Robin movement, he’s the one who continues to stick it out and became accepted into the Bat Family. And from there an entire new journey in his life began.
He'd never been part of a big family before. Before everything went wrong, it was just himself and his parents. So being part of a family as big as the Waynes is a huge change for him. Thankfully he’s not the only one who has had to make that change and the other kids do take time to make him feel welcome. It’s made it so that he does feel that need to prove himself to them, to make them proud of him, and show that he’s in it for the long haul just like they are. He makes mistakes, they make mistakes but there is a bond in being part of this family that means so much to him.
Duke may come across as kind of dorky at times, and even passive, but it’s only when around people he cares about. He tends to be more passive and willing to let things go with those he loves, even if they are being kind of bratty (like Damian lying about the T-Rex in the BatCave being real and him falling for it), and stumbles and stutters when he has a crush. He will get his shit together when he needs to, but he’s also a 16-year-old kid and thus has his own flare for teen drama. His just tends to be in the form of practicing his superhero lines in the mirror to try and emulate Batman, because he really looks up to him. And when it’s not with someone he cares about, Duke can be a very different person. He can be stubborn and refuse to compromise at times.
Sometimes he thinks to himself that he’s more “calm” and more “normal” than a lot of his other family members, as Duke can be a bit blind to his own flaws or quirks. The fact he’s the only member of the family who fights crime during the day (something that the people of Gotham also think is weird because they expect their supervillains and vigilantes to stick to nocturnal schedules) and therefore working mostly alone without any real backup is its own brand of weird. But Gotham needs someone to stand up for it even when the sun is out, and Duke is willing to be that person.

Areas of Interest / Brainstorming:
Duke is going to have a “fun” time here in game and I would love to see where it could go. For one, he will be in another universe away from his family, only to meet people who are alternate versions of the family he has back home. I am interested in seeing how Duke’s world view (which is generally more optimistic thanks to the very wholesome and loving—if kind of dysfunctional--atmosphere he’s been welcomed into) goes up against these other walks of life and how his stubborn nature can come to the fore more when he’s not around people he’s more likely to give in to and compromise with.
I am also interested in playing around with Duke’s abilities, whether in more amusing kind of mishaps or in more serious scenarios. The potential plot of metahumans to be experimented on by a scientist because of their abilities could be something fun to play around with considering Duke has an ability to boost the powers of others around them and he can’t exactly control that ability. It’s something that could be used for good or ill in terms of player plots or game plots. Metahumans in this world aren’t the exact same, but it would be very interesting for him to learn how to finally control his abilities after someone tries to use them for negative purposes. I would be interested in assisting in a plot like this because Duke could be a walking temporary confluence on his own if his powers were to get too out of control and that is something I would find interesting to play with in game, if permitted.
